Gionee Elife E8 changed my concept about Phablets. I have been a big time fan of Large Displays and bigger in-built memory for years. Gionee phones were not so fascinating in past, but in last one year, Gionee has been concentrating a lot on Design, Durability, and Technology : specially slim phones and Photography.

Having tried S+, impressive camera, and now E8 : 24 MP Camera ( On Ultrapixel Mode, you can snap 120 MP Pics ). This smartphone is for those persons who believe in carrying large displays, want to replace DSLR with Camera ( sounds crazy, but its real ), Gaming, Document Editing.

                  Gionee Elife E8 directly competes with Nexus 6P  ( 5.7″ ), Le Max 64 GB ( 6.33″), Galaxy Note 4 ( 5.7″), Note 5 ( 5.7″). I am not considering Asus Zenfone ( FHD Display ), Xperia C5 ( low ROM and FHD Display ), Oppo R7 Plus ( FHD Display ).

                  Specs of Elife E8

                  • 6″ AMOLED 2K Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 WQHD ( 2560 * 1440 )
                  • 2GHz Helio X10 Processor with
                  • 3GB RAM + 64GB ROM with expandable memory up-to 128GB
                  • 24 MP Camera with OIS , PDAF, Dual Tone LED Flash + 8 MP Selfie
                  • NFC, Finger Print Scanner
                  • 3500 mAh Non-removable battery

Elegant Design, Gold color, Flip carry case, Half Window Display, Unibody, Every Design part will drive you crazy. E8 got a metal frame, wih removable plastic back cover ( finish and touch will make you feel good ). Well crafted Round Edge, Shiny Metal lines, Nicely grooved Finger Print scanner with Camera and flash placed just above scanner.

The good point is well designed Volume Rocker, power key and quick camera hot key ( long press to activate camera in locked screen) on the right side. The only missing point in Design is, Gionee gave lot of space for Bezels. If they work little hard on narrowing Bezels, E8 can kill all the premium Smartphones. Another point is, instead of Black bezel, it should be gold color. Reason being, Aesthetic looks of the Display.

On the top center, you get 3.5 mm jack and bottom, you will find USB Charging port. I could not find any flaws in the Design of back cover and Metal frame.

Let me tell you, its not a very sleek smartphone @ 9.6 mm thickness and weighing 220 g. Design might have lost few points just because of thickness.

As mentioned above, 6″ WQHD Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The most impressive part is the pixel density, very rarely you will get 490 ppi on a 6″ Display. For Display, you wont find any issues, as E8 is using AMOLED Display and a very high resolution. Display is very much vibrant, lively and good for bright sun light ( keep brightness high ). Good point is viewing angle, display does not fade out even if you view from any angle.

For Display, you will get three options : Neutral, Cool and warm color. By Default, you get Neutral color, but i choose Cool color option. Other features of Display include Cast Screen, Font options, Blackscreen Gestures ( like C for camera, M for Music ),  Touch-less Gesture ( i love this feature while waking up phone or scrolling pictures or home screen or Video Control ).

Display is equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, so not worried about keys or any other hard metal, and yes thanks to the screen protector which comes free with the Retail pack.

One point is missing in Display, Touch Buttons are not Back-Lit and work with little force. In this area, Gionee needs improvement.

                  Hardware & Performance

Been using this phoen for over a month now, found no handing or lag or any other issues specially heating up, when you have to work for hours, whether playing game, or watching videos, doing Multitasking. Thanks to the superfast Octa-Core Helio X 10 Processor clocked at 2 GHz and 3GB RAM coupled with PowerVR G6200.

Let me remind you, E8 comes with 64GB inbuilt memory, which plays a significant role, when it comes to the Speed of the smartphone, when you load lot of Apps, pictures or Video.

The Good point is, I been using E8 on day-to-day basis, and it has not let me down on Multi-tasking and speed. In fact, E8 is designed to perform well on Video Streaming and Gaming. During the Battery test for 10 minutes, The smartphone was cool ( running on Rich graphics ) , The temperature never rose above 35 degrees, But, I believe it’s in all smartphones, Not just in Gionee. Worked on almost 26 applications at a time, and every thing went smooth.

The screen response time is great, and Zoom capabilities are really good. Based on some feedback’s, We downloaded Desktop Versions of few Websites, and amazingly every thing went smooth. Fingerprint sensor works very fast and was accurate all the time.

                  Benchmark Scores

                  Antutu : 59373 , 58701

                  Geekbench : Single Core – 912 / Multi-Core – 4821 ( Multi-Core Gionee E8 hit the top slot )

                  Nenamark : 59.8 fps

                  Quadrant : 32069

                  Memory Test : Sequential Read : 215.21 MB/s ::: Sequential Write : 98.76 MB/s ::: Camera : 66.5 msec

                  Software and UI

E8 is equipped with Amigo 3.0 with Android Lollipop 5.1. Gionee has done pretty well by improving a lot on UI, What i came to know from Senior Management that Customer voice is taken in account while designing Amigo.

The new Interface is very much clean and user friendly. The only difference which i could find out was ” Quick Menu is opened from bottom instead of scrolling down from Top “.

You may not find app drawer, but you can install Google now Launcher later. Another good point is, The Screen savers when the phone is locked.  Multi-tasking is pretty much similar to the Stock Android experience, once you tap on the menu button, you get recently launched apps. Another feature like Stock Android ” Close All apps in one go “.

The other Apps which you get are Child Mode, Theme Park, Mood card. GStore, System manager and Chameleon. Chameleon is one App which I love ” The app uses camera, you can focus camera on any color of your choice and set the color as Theme color”.

Gionee has provided 4 games Spider-man Ultimate, Bubble bash Mania, Asphalt Nitro and Real Football 2014, but all the games are just demo versions. After playing Demo, you need to pay money for getting the Full App. With that, you will get lot of Apps on GStore ( Gionee Store ).

This is one part of E8, I like to speak about. Very impressive with 24MP + OIS + PDAF ( Phase Detection Auto Focus ), Selfie camera with 8MP Configuration. The key features of camera include BSI Sensor, Ultrapixel Mode, Manual Mode, Lossless Zoom upto 4x.

Camera Modes include : Normal, Professional, Face Beauty, Take anytime, Magic Focus, Filter, HDR, Panorama, Night, PicNote, UltraPixel and Smart Scene.

Camera Settings include : capturemode, countdown, guidelines, front mirror, picture size ( 24 MP ~ 5 MP ), Geo tagging, Anti banding ( Auto, 50 Hz and 60 Hz ).

For Video : Anti Shaking, Scene Mode, Video Quality ( QCIF ~ 4K), White Balance, Anti Banding

We tested E8 both cameras in all modes and conditions, specially Night Mode, Low Light Mode. The pictures came out to be way to impressive in standard conditions, but Night pics in standard mode were not impressive. Even with Night mode, you will get slight grainy pictures. We decided to use Professional Mode in Night, That way grains could be compensated well.

The most impressive part of camera is UltraPixel Mode, which can capture minute Details also even on Zoom. This reminds me of Oppo cameras, but Gionee crossed that border by miles with 120 MP as compared to 50 MP offered by Oppo.

When it comes to Day light pictures whether in Running mode, Lanscape or Wild life, I am sure you will not pick up DSLR. More than Rear camera, Selfie was much more impressive, very bright and clear. Only missing point is wide angle selfie, which I think is well compensated with the quality.

I landed up beating selfie of iPhone 6S Plus, iphone 6 and much more Models. I am always in favor of Gionee. To be honest, I became fan of Gionee since I started using S plus.

                  Sample Images

E8 is powered by a 3500 mAh Non-removable battery. OTG is one of the key benefits , If you like to charge another Smartphone via Elife E8, you can use E8 as a power Bank.

Battery charging time is approx. 2 hours. We tested the Smartphone with almost 60 % brightness, and conducted all the tests on graphic Mode, Watching you tube on 480p, still E8 gave a life of aprrox one and half day, which by any standards is way too good.

Though, some one may think with 6″ 2K Display, battery drainage will be very high, but you can always work smart with the battery. Gionee has managed well OST , In most of the smartphones you may notice – most of the battery is drained by ” Cell standby time ” and ” Screen  “. For screen Gionee has managed to reduce it to 8 %, while other smartphones still go up-to 20 %.

E8 gives you all the options Dual Sim, 4G, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP support and Screen Cast. I could not find any thing missing except Infra Red, as I use most of my smartphones as Remote Commander also. For me, it may a negative point, while for others it may not ( all together a personal choice ).

We never had any call drop / connectivity or Voice clarity issues. Here I would like to mention, Gionee did a good job in call and voice clarity, rather went one step further, provided hands free kit in Golden Color, which is really premium. Very hard to find hands free in Golden color.

                  Final Verdict

Gionee Elife E8 is a flagship phone designed primarily for people who prefer Large Display, Designer and powerful devices. The phone is packed with High End configuration to play heavy games and render great picture quality. To sum up, this is the phone that will not leave you disappointed. If you are in Gaming, Photography, Simply Go ahead and Don’t think twice.
