                  HTC One A9

The key question in every review is ” whether reader should purchase that particular Mobile or No “. In case of HTC A9, the question is same – whether it’s a better Machine than iphone or No.

Why we took iPhone 5 / 6s in consideration , is basically the design factor of HTC One A9. This time, HTC failed to impress in terms of Design, as well as in battery. These two factors basically created a negative review of A9.

We will divide Design in two factors : Form Factor and Material. Form Factor as already discussed, is almost similar to iPhone 6 / 6S or , may be the old iPhone 5. The A9 weighs only 142 gm, same like iPhone, and a sleek mobile at 7.26 mm, while iPhone measures @ 7.1 mm. Another missing point is screen to Body ration, which is very very low @ 66.8 %.

Coming to Material, The good part is made out of Metal. Overall, Metal and Plastic fusion is the trend for Today. Actually the ” D ” on the back is not exactly the form factor, It’s basically the LDF Antenna embedded in the back cover.

But iPhone users, and even some other Android adopters, may not feel happy about ergonomics.

In Apple design, volume buttons are placed on the upper left, when iPhone is held in portrait mode. HTC made the slot for SIM and microSD at the same place. The key is to remeber that these are not Volume Rockers, but slots.

On the other side of the phone, One A9 got the power on/off button below that for sound. iPhone power button is always placed on top right, while most of the android phones have volume controls below power.

The only issue in Metal finish is, it does not provides great grip, and the rounded bevel makes fumbling too easy. HTC One A9 offers better balance than the M8 or M9, and it is more firmly handled than the iPhone.

The HTC A9 sports a 5″ AMOLED FHD display 1920 * 1080p ~ 441 ppi, which is technically far better than 1334 x 750 resolution of newer iPhone. The favorable point for A9 are Vivid Color and contrast.

Apple purists may argue that iPhone’s screen is superior, But the fact is A9 Display is better than iPhone. Another key point in Display is the Touch Screen, I don’t know why, but personally prefer iPhone Touch over any other5 Smartphone.

Conclusion is, HTC A9 Display is satisfying. Another Good point is, Protection by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

                  Performance and Speed – Antutu Score 40519 / Geekbench – 740 ( Single Core ) / 3056 ( Multi-Core )

In performance, mainly two points are considered – Tech specs and Real speed while doing Multi Tasking / downloading apps – Videos – Games. Speed is calculated while playing games, if we face some lag, the smartphone is lacking the speed and is not a great performer. The Games which are considered are basically Rich in Graphics and Motion, Like – Asphalt or Spidy or CSR Racing.

Let’s have a look at the Heart of the Smartphone – Processor and the RAM / ROM.

                  One A9 is powered by Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53 Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617, coupled with 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM.

Impressive specs, and the HTC A9 performs accordingly. Most impressive was smooth Audio and Video Streaming. No lag was observed while playing games and downloading apps, though some of the users reported lag while downloading apps.

Though, A9 has not performed well on benchmark, but as compared to Asus and Xiaomi Models , the phone performed well.

Another Good performance factor can be the fast Fingerprint scanner placed on Home Screen. In most of the Android Smartphones, finger print scanner is placed on back side.

Another performance factor includes, Call Quality, Works well and good sound and no voice breaking was noted.

As always, Android M is the most amazing Android Version. But the major issue is the Sense UI, Sense or Non ??  Theme Engine does not seem to be new and exciting, Even Dialer does not look so impressive. Multiple apps for Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Photos and much more.

the Quick setting Menu seems like Android Stocks, looks same as of Nexus 6P. The main settings features some quick toggles between apps like Wi-fi and Bluetooth.

You have the option to personalize Themes, Colors and Fonts. The Good feature is , you get the option to Turn-off Ads in HTC Sense. But, Honestly I don’t expect such a high priced phone to have in-built ads.

I think, In all the Smartphones what we look forward to is Camera Quality. On papers, One A9 is equipped with 13MP –  f/2.0 Rear camera and A 4 MP 1080p@30fps, HDR, 1/3′ sensor size, 2µm pixel size Selfie. The White balance is much much better and taking pictures in HDR Mode is pleasant.

HTC has been using a Terminology for Selfie Camera : known as Ultra Pixel . Technically, it says more pixels in small Area, which seems to compensate the low light, or in Other words, more light will enter while shooting.

This is the part, where HTC seems to beat iPhone camera with ease. iPhone camera is hardly taking 720p, while HTC A9 is capable of shooting 1080p videos.

Another features in camera include :

                  • Slow motion video( frame rate can not be adjusted )
                  • Hyperlapse
                  • Pro mode ( useful for long exposure night shots )
                  • RAW Pictures
                  • Videos @ 1080p

This is another good point about One A9. It got good speakers – Dolby Audio and Hi Res Audio. The only missing point as compared to M series is the depth. You can surely get a good sound experience on Headsets.

Even the call quality is good, no cracking of sound even in low Signal Zone. Though, hearing sound is a slight issue, otherwise, it works well.

Though the battery specs are not at all impressive, but on benchmarks battery seems to performs good. The A9 battery performed almost equivalent to 5X battery which is rated at 2700 mAh.

On an average, you can roughly get a life of 10 hours with average use of calls, Video and Streaming. But, under heavy usage battery drains very fast. May be thanks to the technology of Snapdragon 617, which makes the battery work longer. The favorable point which works for battery is ” Doze Mode”.

In my opinion, HTC should have included a battery of around 2700 mAh.

Price is one of the key point in India. Purchasing a Mobile of around 30k is not an ordinary users profile. We have so many Smartphones below 30 k in India, specially, Oneplus 2, few models of iPhone and Galaxy A series, Not to forget Moto.

Price is slightly disappointing, The Model should have been roughly ~ 24k.  A9 is supposed to be Mid-range, affordable device, but the price is one of the discouraging factor. The question which comes in mind is !! should I spend money on One A9 or go for Nexus 6P or iPhone 6.

HTC A9 is a good package, looks premium with some gtreat features, but Not worth the purchase at this price. Wait for some more time, let the price drop happen and than go for it.

Hope, HTC is listening to the consumers, and may rethink on Price Policy
