Design and Display
Vernee Thor comes with an elegant design, with 2.5D glass panel upfront and a soft touch back. Said back gets dirty pretty easily and it’s a bit of a grease magnet. Secured by Corning Gorilla Glass3. The best part is the 80 % screen to body ratio, which makes it the best Smartphone in Terms of Corner to Corner Display with narrow Bezels.
Thor is symmetrically designed with Round Corners and Plastic material. The first looks of Thor give impression of Oneplus X, which you can take a plus point. The feel of China made smartphone comes when you try to remove the back cover, which is definitely not an easy task.
Because of the Slim Size, with a thickness of 7.9 mm and weighing only 140 g, Vernee THor is very comfortable for One hand Operation. Though the Display is quite bright, and viewable from difficult Angles also. The only Missing point in Display is Pixelization, Vernee Thor packs only HD Display.
The screen of Thor is a 5 Touch Panel, Dynamic contrast and adaptive brightness, is impressive indoors and not that bad in outdoor.
This is a Dual Sim LTE Smartphone, with a Fingerprint Scanner on back.
Hardware and Performance
Vernee Thor packs an octa core 64 bit MediaTek MT6753 processor, clocked at 1.3 GHz and coupled with Mali T720 MP3 GPU, clocked at 450 MHz. The Smartphone runs on 3GB RAM with 16GB Internal Memory, which is further expandable up to 128GB via a microSD Card.
When we talk of performance, We got some shocking results, Specially in GeekBench 3, in the multi core test, where Thor landed up beating even iPhone 6 Plus, which by any standard is excellent.
In benchmarks , Thor scored better than ASUS ZenFone Zoom and Sony Xperia Z3, at least in Quadrant, while in AnTuTu 6.0 Thor was placed higher than Huawei Honor 5X and Huawei P8 Max.
When it comes to multi-tasking, No lag was faced. Specially while playing games like Riptide. But the key issue appeared after around 20 minutes of game play, where Device touched a temperature of around 42 degree. So we decided to for GFX Benchmark for Thermal issues, Here Thor went up to we got to 36.8 degrees Celsius, so at least in that section there was no overheating.
Coming to acoustics, Not that bad, The equalizer is a stock one, with 5 channels to customize, Bass boost and Surround Sound. The actual listening experience involved a loud and clear sound, good piano rendering, no distortion, good bass and a slight muffling.
On decibelmeter test. Thor got 85 dBA at the back and 83.4 dBA at the front, scoring higher than Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7 and Huawei P8, that sounds good. Sound got some interesting setting options like BES Audio Enhance, Loudness and Surround, for an extra acoustics boost.
The web browser works on slower side and you get stock keyboard , which is very comfortable to use. The browser benchmarks were not great, when we suspected whether it’s Wi-Fi issue or the Phone Browser. At times, Wi-fi signals were also lost. Though, at times i was suspecting my connection, but on other High end smartphones like Note 5, E8, Apple 6S and LG G4, it was working well.
Vernee Thor also provides a very good feature of Turbo Download , that gives the facility of combining WiFi and 4G at the same time for ultra fast download. When it comes to calls, they were clear, good reception, A good two way communication.
On Papers, Camera specs are 13 megapixel back shooter on the Thor, with F/2.0 aperture, LED flash and BSI sensor. The selfie shooter has a 5 MP resolution.
The most dis-appointing part of the Camera is the slow start and very basic UI. Even if we talk of 4x zoom , even it’s not upto mark. Focus seems to be fast and accurate, while capturing pictures is on slower side. Even the Camera interface is very basic, since it doesn’t even include capture modes. All you will get are filters, HDR, panorama, flash options, white balance and scenes.
Coming to the quality of Rear Camera, If you plan to take pictures in day light, Let’s say, Sunny day, you can definitely expect a good shot. Couple of good points about Camera : Realistic Colors, Low loss in Zoom Mode, Landscape Pictures and low light shots with Flash. Some points which needs improvement are : HDR Shots ( Extra White ), Low light shots takes little extra time.
Low light video capture was unimpressive, but during the day I was quite surprised by this 3GPP capture. It’s actually better than many ASUS ZenFones and some Huawei Honor units. It’s a very good camera overall, but too bad for the lack of options.
In a Smartphone Battery Review, Every one is always worried about the Battery back up and the charge time. The major issue in all the Smartphone starts, when the battery level goes to 10~15 %.
In this case, Honestly speaking my ranking for Samsung and Apple is always on Top. Reason being, these are the two smartphones which can work up to even 1 % of the level. Here Apple has shown it’s true excellence.
Vernee Thor is powered by a 2800 mAh battery, which on papers is too good for a 5″ HD Display. Vernee claims 2 days of battery usage time and with 90 minutes charge time.
In actual usage, battery lived up to the expectations. In video playback test over Wi-fi, Thor battery went for 8 hours and 33 minutes, which in fact has beaten the Galaxy Note 4 by margins, plus the HTC One A9, Sony Xperia Z5 and Huawei Mate S. In PCMark score went for 7 hours and 31 minutes, a fantastic result for such an affordable phone.
Now coming to Charge Time, The charging time is very dis appointing, 170 minutes for full charge. But taking in consideration, Android M Doze feature, Battery can definitely perform far batter.
Overall, An impressive Smartphone. But, seeing the landed price in India which comes to around Rs 9600, Thor may not be a very good buy. As Indian Smartphone market already got few Smartphones like Xiaomi, Asus and LeECO sub 10k and at better specs like Internal Memory and Better Camera.
